Worldreader is a non-profit organization that strongly believes in the power of media and technology in making this world a better place. Those of you who know me, will confirm that these are the exact fields I have worked in and that I am massively passionate about. Worldreader is committed to making digital books available to all in the developing world, with the help of e-reader technology and mobile networks. Currently Worldreader is running pilot projects in Ghana, Kenya and increasingly in other African countries, to prove the feasibility and efficiency of promoting education via e-readers. 6 schools in different villages in Ghana have started iRead classes in which students are reading textbooks on Kindles and are allowed to take these home to read privately as well. The goal is to enable 1 Million children in the developing world to enjoy e-books by 2015.
Now this is where I come in:
The Worldreader pilots have shown that children love using their e-readers at home to read fictional books, and that this really sparks their imagination. However there is a considerable number of children who can not download books at home, because their Kindles refuse accessing the GSM network, sometimes completely, sometimes for a couple of weeks, before they have access again, the next outage never being predictable. My challenge is to narrow down the problem, and work with Worldreader corporate partners towards implementing a solution.
So far for setting the scene, will keep you posted! Do let me know what you think, by posting a comment :-)
All the best,
Carl
